Max McGreevy Plays Final Four Holes Solo; Takes Second-Round Lead by Two at -12
By Jeremy Friedman
JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – When Max McGreevy made his birdie putt on 18 to take a two-stroke lead today at the Magnit Championship at 12-under, he took off his hat, smirked and did an imaginary shaking of hands with his playing competitors.
McGreevy’s two playing competitors the first two rounds – Tad Ridings and Cody Black – both withdrew prior to the conclusion of the second round. Ridings withdrew after Thursday’s opening round and Black withdrew in the middle of today’s second round.
“It kind of felt like a practice round where I was waiting behind the group in front of me,” said McGreevy, who is #TOURBound and will be returning to the PGA TOUR in 2025. “Obviously, it is out of the ordinary. You’re just trying to be in good spirits the entire time. It was nice talking to Vanjo, our walking scorer, and just kind of keeping it light-hearted and giving myself some looks there at the end.”
McGreevy closed out his second round with a 12-foot birdie putt – his seventh of the day – to turn in a 5-under 67 and a 12-under par two-day total, a new 36-hole record for the Magnit Championship.
McGreevy became #TOURBound in June when he captured his second Korn Ferry Tour title at the Memorial Health Championship presented by LRS with a dramatic 13-foot putt on the 72nd and final hole. 2025 will be McGreevy’s third season on the PGA TOUR.
“I definitely feel relaxed. I’m trying to hone in on the things that I think I need to get better at, playing on the PGA TOUR next year,” continued McGreevy. “I’ve had two seasons out there. I know what I struggle with. I know what I need to get better at and what it takes to win and be a really good player. Hopefully this year coming back down on the Korn Ferry Tour was the best thing for me.”
Trailing McGreevy by two shots at 10-under par are Sam Bennett and first round leader Will Chandler. In total, 21 players are within five shots of the lead.
In addition to attempting to claim the Magnit Championship title and the $180,000 first prize, the field is jockeying for position heading into next week’s Korn Ferry Tour Finals, where the top 156 players on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List following Sunday’s conclusion will advance to the first leg of the Finals, taking place in Boise, Idaho.
A total of 75 players made the cut today at 3-under par. Saturday’s third round will begin at 6:45 a.m. as twosomes off of No. 1 tee, with McGreevy and Bennett teeing off at 1 p.m.
