McGreevy and Chandler Brave the Elements at Metedeconk, Set the Magnit Championship 54-Hole Record at 15-Under Par Heading into Sunday
By Jeremy Friedman
JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – This week, Max McGreevy and Will Chandler have traded places at the top of the leaderboard at the Magnit Championship, with Chandler taking the opening-round lead and McGreevy supplanting him atop the leaderboard on Friday. Heading into tomorrow’s final round, they find themselves tied at 15-under par – setting the tournament 54-hole record – with the Magnit Championship trophy in sight.
For McGreevy, this is a familiar position. He has competed in the final group on Sunday two times in 2024, with a win at the Memorial Health Championship in June, a runner-up finish at the UNC Health Championship also in June. He is a two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour who is #TOURBound for 2025 and currently in 4th position in the Korn Ferry Tour Points List. It is a comfortable position that he seeks out and thrives in.
“Golf is fun when you are playing golf like this,” said McGreevy, who turned in a 3-under 69 on Saturday that featured multiple rain showers during the course of the day. “Just excited for another good round at Metedeconk. It is an awesome course and I’m excited to get it going.”
McGreevy also will have another piece of comfort on Sunday. His wife Liv is arriving tonight and will be in the gallery cheering him on during his final round.
“Yeah, super comfortable,” continued McGreevy. “I’m going to pick up my wife from the airport after this [interview]. It will be super relaxed and that will be super nice to have her. We’re going to golf a little bit earlier tomorrow, too, which I won’t have to think about quite as much. I’m just excited where my game’s at, and I’m excited to play another round.”
For Chandler, this will be the first time he is in the final group on the Korn Ferry Tour, where a lot is on the line this week in the final regular season event. In addition to a $180,000 first-prize check, a win will catapult him to close to the top-30 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List heading into next week’s Finals, and he will secure Korn Ferry Tour status for 2025.
Chandler, who did not have status on the Korn Ferry Tour to start the season, Monday qualified into his first four Korn Ferry Tour events of the year. After a T10 finish at The Ascendant presented by Blue that advanced him to the following week (T40 at Price Cutter Charity Championship), he Monday qualified into last week’s event, the Pinnacle Bank Championship, finishing T44. Chandler sitting at 134th on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List made him eligible for this week’s Magnit Championship.
For Chandler, Sunday is going to be another day at the office, where he is not looking ahead to the future.
“Yeah, I don’t really think about that,” said Chandler following 5-under 67 round that featured five birdies and an eagle. “We’re out there doing the best we can each shot see where that puts us…It’s not going to be any different. It’s a round of golf, it’s what we’ve been doing all year. It should be fun.”
Right behind McGreevy and Chandler is a crowded leaderboard featuring 13 players within five shots of the lead, including Frankie Capan III (13-under), and Tim Widing and Zach Bouchou (12-under). A win by Capan will make him #TOURBound for 2025, and a win by Widing will make him immediately eligible for the PGA TOUR as a battlefield promotion (three wins in one season).
Tee times for Sunday’s final round are being grouped in threesomes off of one and 10 tees due to potential inclement weather in the afternoon. The first tee time will be at 8 a.m. ET with the leaders teeing off at 10:18 a.m. ET. Gates will open at 7:30 a.m. ET. Tickets are available for purchase at www.magnitchampionship.com.
